Rebecca Amalraj

Rebecca grew up and went to school in the Bendigo area before moving to Melbourne to study Contemporary Art at Deakin University. While studying, she felt drawn to the urban landscape, as living in inner city Melbourne offered endless subject matter in the decaying buildings, peeling layers of paint, plant life that continues to find its way through concrete and brick work, old architecture and modern architecture,  Rebecca spent hours visiting the many small galleries around Richmond, St Kilda, Fitzroy and Melbourne, finding inspiration from practicing artists including Rick Amor, Phillip Wolfhagen, Tony Irving, Aida Tomescu and Rosalie Gascoigne, among others.

Rebecca developed a love for the early Australian painters through regular visits to the National Gallery of Victoria where she discovered artists such as Charlies Blackman, Imants Tillers, Fred Williams, Gary Shead, Margaret Preston, Arthur Streeton and Clarice Beckett.

Rebecca continues to draws inspiration from the surrounding buildings and landscapes, as they are an endless source of texture, colour, possibles composition and subject matter, particularly as they change over time. Works are completed mainly in acrylic or oil paints.

We hope you enjoy Rebeccas Work!
